SIMULTANEOUS INTERPRETING
In simultaneous interpreting, there are always 2 interpreters involved per
language. Because of the exacting demand of the task, which requires that the
interpreter be speaking while the source speaker is still talking, each
interpreter can only work in 20 minute increments. Hence the necessity to have
two interpreters per language. The interpreter sits at a microphone in a
sound-proof booth with a clear view of the speaker. S/he listens through
headphones to the incoming message in the source language and repeats the
message in the target language through the microphone for the target listener.
It goes without saying that a perfect command of both source and target
languages combined with experience and talent are key to the mastery of this
technique. Moreover, it is imperative that the interpreters be cognizant of the
terminology of the subject-matter at hand. Preparation in this kind of
interpreting environment is key. Working in close collaboration with our
clients, CTS LanguageLink™ Project Managers make sure that interpreters receive
all available conference literature, presentation materials, speeches, etc.
ahead of time to ensure that this preparation takes place.
